Piazza Walther
Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige
In the center of Bolzano’s main square you’ll find a marble monument to the German medieval bard Walther von der Vogelweide, but the main attractions are the cafés, restaurants, and shops lining the tiny pedestrian roads, and the Gothic cathedral across Piazza della Parrocchia. The piazza is the best place to start your exploration of the old town.
The basics
The square's architecture reflects Bolzano's blend of Italian and Austrian influences, with the nearby Bolzano Cathedral adding to the historical charm. This makes the piazza an ideal starting point for the many food and walking tours that meander into the old town, and for visitors who want to get oriented and grasp the town's character. Get a close-up view of the poet's statue, step inside the cathedral, linger at the outdoor seating over an espresso, and you may not want to leave.
Things to know before you go
- The square is one of Bolzano’s must-see attractions.
- Wear comfortable shoes to visit this pedestrian-friendly shopping and tourism area.
- A public restroom is available on the northeast side of the square.
How to get there
The piazza is easily accessible by public transportation, including buses and trains. Bolzano's main train station is just a short walk away, and many city buses go to the Waltherplatz bus stop next to the cathedral and across from the square.
When to get there
The square is lively throughout the year, but the best times to visit are during the spring and summer months when the outdoor cafés are bustling, or from November to January when the famous Bolzano Christmas market fills the square with festive cheer. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for avoiding the crowds.
Bolzano’s historic bakery
If you’re visiting Piazza Walther and would like a bite to eat, you have options. On a busy day, you can find vendors selling sausages and other street foods, sit at a (relatively) expensive café, or head to one of the town’s longtime bakeries. Panifico Lemayr on Via Goethe has served lovely bread loaves, sandwiches, and baked goods since 1800—inside, you’ll find pleasing aromas and vintage baking-themed wall paintings and sculptures.
