Placa del Poble

Placa Del Poble, Andorra la Vella, Andorra, AD500

Andorra is a nation of mountains and valleys, so flat space is something to be savored. Built onto the roof of a government building, Andorra la Vella’s unbeautiful Plaça del Poble (Plaza del Pueblo) offers space to stroll and enjoy spectacular mountain views. It also hosts events including the town’s Christmas market.

The basics

An elevator connects the car park at the base to Plaça del Poble to Andorra la Vella’s historic center, neatly unifying two levels of this valley town. You’ll likely find yourself passing through when exploring, with or without a guide. The views of the mountains, the valley, and the Romanesque Church of Sant Esteve can be spectacular, and on warm summer evenings, the red plastic benches become popular local gathering places.

Things to know before you go

  • Plaça del Poble is worth a visit for photographers.

  • Ask about concerts and performances during summer.

  • The elevator makes the flat, smooth square wheelchair accessible, although Andorra’s mountainous terrain is not ideal for travelers who rely on wheelchairs.

How to get there

Plaça del Poble sits just to the south of the Church of Sant Esteve, on the flat roof of a government building, less than a 5-minute walk from the bus station. There’s elevator access from the car park on Carrer del Prat de Creu below or street-level access from the historic center.

When to get there

Plaça del Poble is open 24 hours a day, year-round, but it’s most interesting for people-watching on warm summer evenings. Andorra la Vella’s Christmas market runs here from late November until the end of December, on weekends, public holidays, and Thursday and Friday evenings.

The highlights of the Christmas market

If you’re visiting Andorra during December, Plaça del Poble hosts a lively Christmas market, with rides for kids plus a small ice-skating rink, live performances, and a wealth of Christmas lights. You can shop for jewelry, homewares, handicrafts, and specialty foods, including local sausage, cheese, honey, and chocolate.
