Place de la Liberation
Dijon, Burgundy
In the heart of Dijon, Place de la Libération is the city's main square and a great place for people-watching. This sprawling public space features fountains, cafés, and is the site of one of the city’s most important buildings: the Dijon Ducal Palace (Palais des Ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne).
The basics
Place de la Libération is a main gathering spot in Dijon; many city walking tours start at the square before exploring other parts of the UNESCO-listed historic center. There’s also a tourism information center where English-speaking staff can help you get your bearings. Self-guided scavenger hunts typically include a stop here and offer a fun way to get familiar with Dijon and its history.
Things to know before you go
- Place de la Libération is a must for first-time visitors to Dijon.
- Plenty of cafés line the square, many of which have restrooms for customer use. Additional toilets are available on Rue des Forges, next to the tourism office.
- Place de la Libération and many attractions around it are wheelchair accessible.
How to get there
Place de la Libération is located in the heart of Dijon, less than 15 minutes on foot from the main railway station. While many people stay in the city center and visit the square on foot, you can also take line T1 or T2 of the tram straight there. Multiple bus routes stop on the northern and western sides of the square.
When to get there
Visit Place de la Libération whenever it works best within your Dijon sightseeing itinerary. Note that the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon), which is located inside the Ducal Palace, is closed on Tuesdays. Bastille Day is celebrated in and around the square on July 14 with live music and fireworks.
Visiting the Dijon Ducal Palace
Overlooking the Place de la Libération, the Dijon Ducal Palace was the main seat of power in the city for generations. Today, this stately palace is home to government offices and the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts, which is particularly well-known for its extensive collection of medieval art.
