POINT OF INTEREST

Playa del Janubio

Lanzarote, Lanzarote, 35570

Just south of the Timanfaya National Park, Playa del Janubio is one of Lanzarote’s most unique beaches. Sculpted from volcano rock, the black sand beach stretches across the mouth of the Janubio Lagoon, affording spectacular views across the Janubio Salt Flats and the Atlantic Ocean.

The basics

Strolling along the beach is the best way to take in the views, both out to sea and across the saltwater lagoon. Historic salt pools, the Salinas de Janubio, dot the lagoon, used to harvest sea salt from the lagoon since the late 19th century, and you can watch the age-old methods of salt production on a guided walking tour. Most visitors opt to combine a stop at Playa del Janubio with a tour of the neighboring Timanfaya National Park, wine tasting in the La Geria wine region, or nearby attractions such as the Los Hervideros cliffs and the natural pools of Los Charcones.

Things to know before you go

  • Due to the strong currents and rocky coastline, swimming at Playa del Janubio is not safe.

  • There are no amenities at Playa del Janubio, so bring everything you need.

  • The natural, rocky terrain of Playa del Janubio and the Salinas de Janubio means it is inaccessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Playa del Janubio is located along the Timanfaya Coast in south Lanzarote, close to La Hoya. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Arrecife along LZ-2, with access to the beach via a dirt road. There’s no public transport to the beach, so you will need your own transport or to join a tour.

When to get there

You can visit the beach any time, but for the most memorable views, time your arrival to watch the sunset. Day trips often stop at Playa del Janubio, so arriving early or late is the best way to dodge the crowds. The Janubio Salt Flats are open Monday–Friday from 10am to 6pm, and Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

Exploring the volcanic wonders of Timanfaya

Black dunes, vast lunar landscapes, and jagged volcanic cliffs roll out across Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote’s most impressive natural wonder. Take a guided bus tour along the Route of the Volcanoes, stopping to admire the volcanic craters and lava fields, then saddle up for a camel ride or hike the Timanfaya Coastal Route. For a unique experience, enjoy lunch at the park’s El Diablo restaurant, where food is cooked on barbecue pits using geothermal heat.
