POINT OF INTEREST

Playa La Cachora

Todos Santos, Mexico, 23300

Rampant tourism hasn’t reared its head in Todos Santos, probably the prettiest town in Baja—and this long beach is gloriously free of any development. Reach the beach via La Cachora dirt road for beach days, long-distance whale-watching, gnarly surf breaks, and top-notch strolling and sunset watching. Undertows and heavy breaks make La Cachora dangerous for swimming most of the year.

The basics

While occasional beach tours and horseback riding experiences make it out to La Cachora, this beach is best for the DIY traveler. You’ll need a car for beach access—at the end of a relatively short dirt road, where you'll find golden sand and little else. Bring beach gear and food, as there are no amenities. Walk south long enough, and you’ll find a small freshwater lagoon and another long undeveloped beauty—Playa Todos Santos B.C.S.

Things to know before you go

  • This beach is ideal if you're interested in an off-the-beaten-path beach near Todos Santos.

  • Swim carefully, as the beach doesn’t have lifeguards.

  • Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach.

  • The beach has horse and all-terrain vehicle trails.

  • The beach is free and open to the public.

How to get there

La Cachora lies about 10 minutes west of Todos Santo by car, without public transit options. To reach the beach from Todos Santos, take Av. Gral Topete north from the center of town and veer sharply left at La Cachora Road—then drive about half a mile (800 meters) to the end of the road. Park on the road.

When to get there

Generally, the best time to visit Santos is from November to April when the weather is not too hot and pleasant for getting outdoors (and staying there). This period also coincides with Baja whale-watching season, when you can spot whales from the coast. However, La Cochara may be better for swimming in summer, when the shore breaks are calmer.

Getting to Todos Santos from the airport

Step off your plane at the airports near Todos Santos (La Paz and Cabo San Lucas are closest), and you’ll encounter cabs and private shuttles advertising rides to your destination. You can prebook to avoid hassle; cabs and private shuttles often cost more than US$100. Buses, like those from Eco Baja Tours, cost considerably less, around US$20.
