Plaza de Caicedo (Plaza de Cayzedo)
San Pedro, Cali, Valle del Cauca
Serving as the epicenter of Cali’s historic district, the bustling Caycedo Square (Plaza de Caicedo) is a charming mix of classic and contemporary architecture. While also a fitting showcase of modern Cali, the square’s stately architecture lends the square an air of grandeur, with the snow-white facades of the National Palace (Palacio Nacional) and the Metropolitan Cathedral looming over the south and east corners.
The basics
Caycedo Square exemplifies the vibrant spirit that characterizes Cali—it teems with street artists and food vendors and makes a popular picnic spot for locals with its central gardens shaded by towering palm trees. As it’s Cali’s central hub and main navigational landmark, you’re likely to start your tour of the city from here; Cali walking tours tend to cover nearby attractions such as the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and La Ermita Church (Iglesia La Ermita).
Things to know before you go
The flat surfaces of Plaza de Caicedo are easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
It’s free to enter most of the landmarks surrounding the square, including La Ermite Church and the Metropolitan Cathedral. You can’t go inside the National Palace.
You’ll find plenty of street food vendors if you need a pick-me-up.
How to get there
Plaza de Caicedo sits between Calle 5 and Calle 6 in Cali’s historic center; it has its own bus stop, which is serviced by the regularly running E21, P24B, P27D, and P52D buses. The square is a staple of many Cali sightseeing tours, saving you the hassle of navigating.
When to get there
The park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, however, the landmarks surrounding it generally open from morning till early evening. Exercise caution if you’re visiting the park after dark. During the Cali Fair (Feria de Cali) at the end of December, the square serves as the center for the city-wide celebrations.
Discover Cali’s other squares
Caycedo Square is the only notable square in Cali—other outdoor spaces worth visiting include Cat Park (Parque del Gato de Tejada), home to some 15 cat sculptures painted by different Colombian artists, and Parque Artesanal Loma de La Cruz, where local vendors sell handicrafts.
