Plaza Muñoz Gamero

Plaza Muñoz Gamero, Punta Arenas, Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica

The grand, tree-lined Plaza Muñoz Gamero (also known as the Plaza de Armas) is a popular gathering place in Punta Arenas due to its historic atmosphere and close proximity to some of the city’s most important attractions. Surrounded by 19th-century baroque mansions, the plaza offers a glimpse into Punta Arenas during its heydey

The basics

It only takes a few minutes to walk across the square, but most visitors linger under the shady trees to take in the sights and sounds of local life or purchase handicrafts from the vendors who set up shop in the square. The plaza is famed for its Ferdinand Magellan statue, enacted to commemerate the 400th anniversary of the Portuguese explorer’s expedition through the Strait of Magellan. A central information center offers travelers maps and recommendations, making this a perfect first stop on a trip to Punta Arenas. Shore excursions and walking tours of Punta Arenas typically pass through the square.

Things to know before you go

  • Most vendors sell authentic local handicrafts, but mass-produced souvenirs are also on sale. Check carefully before purchasing.

  • Stray dogs often roam the square but typically don’t bother people.

  • There are park benches in the square where visitors can rest and soak up the atmosphere.

  • During times of political unrest, the square is often a gathering place for protestors.

How to get there

Plaza Muñoz Gamero is located in the center of Punta Arenas. It is just a 5-minute drive (or 30-minute walk) from Arturo Prat Pier. Other attractions within a short walking distance of the square include the Magallanes Regional Museum (Museo Regional de Magallanes), the Sociedad Menendez Behety building, and the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum (Museo Maggiorino Borgatello).

When to get there

The Plaza Muñoz Gamero is open to visitors throughout the day and night. Travelers looking to explore the stalls of local vendors and shop for handmade crafts should arrive any time before dusk when merchants close up shop and head home for the evening.

Magellanes Regional Museum

At the Magallanes Regional Museum, visitors can see the well-preserved former residence of the Braun and Menéndez families. The museum displays a number of artifacts detailing the history and culture of the Magallanes region, as well as a collection of fine furniture, tapestries, and statues.
