Pontao do Lago Sul

SHIS Ql 10, Brasília, Brazil, 71630-115

If you’re looking for a spot to escape Brasilía’s crowds without heading too far from downtown, South Lake Pontoon or Pontao do Lago Sul is just the place. On the southwest shore of Paranoá Lake, this park affords magnificent lake views, palm-lined walkways, water sports, and restaurants right on the waterfront.

The basics

If you’re exploring Brasilia on a walking or biking tour, you're likely to stop at the local hangout of Pontao do Lago Sul. You might swing by to admire lake views and Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, take a boat cruise, or watch the sunset from the pontoon. Bring a picnic, grab an açai bowl and ice cream from the kiosks, or choose between 10 different restaurants, ranging from a laid-back surf bar to an upmarket wine bar.

Things to know before you go

  • Pontao do Lago Sul is suitable for all ages, whether you bring the kids for an afternoon stroll or stay late to drink and dine with friends.

  • You can enjoy water sports such as sailing, water skiing, and wakeboarding at the lake, but it’s not suitable for swimming. There is no lifeguard patrol.

  • The pontoon is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, although access may vary at the different restaurants.

How to get there

Pontao do Lago Sul is on the southwest shore of Lake Paranoá at the southern end of the Honestino Guimarães Bridge. It’s about 2.5 miles (four kilometers) from the Esplanada dos Ministérios in downtown Brasília or a 15-minute drive. Plenty of free parking is available. It’s generally easiest and safest to get around Brasilia by car, and taxis and Ubers are widely available.

When to get there

The Pontao do Lago Sul is open daily, year-round, from early morning to midnight, or 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. Kiosk and restaurant hours vary, but you’ll find plenty of options for lunch or dinner, many with open-air seating. Stick around to watch the sunset over the lake or time your visit for one of the many seasonal events such as the Summer Festival or Christmas Festival.

Sightseeing on and around Paranoá Lake

Created by the damming of the Paranoa River, the vast Paranoá Lake is one of the largest manmade lakes in Brazil. Curling around the eastern boundary of the city, it’s dotted with landmarks, recreation areas, and lakeside resorts. Take to the water to sail or enjoy water sports; admire architectural landmarks such as the JK Bridge, the Olympic Center, and the PalácioPalácio da Alvorada; and look out for wildlife such as capybaras, eagles, and black-tufted ear marmoset monkeys.
