Ponte Pietra
Verona, Veneto, 37121
Spanning the Adige River on the northern edge of the city, Ponte Pietra reflects Verona’s remarkable history. This stone-and-brick footbridge was built by Romans in 100 BC and remained largely intact until several of its arches were blown up during World War II. Today, the reconstructed bridge is one of Verona’s top attractions.
The Basics
A stroll across Ponte Pietra (Stone Bridge) is must for first-time visitors to Verona. Nearly every sightseeing tour of Verona includes a visit to the historic bridge, and you’ll naturally cross Ponte Pietra when traveling between the Verona Cathedral and the Roman Theatre. Views from the bridge are stunning, day or night, and are especially dramatic at sunset.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Ponte Pietra is a must-see for first-time visitors to Verona.
Wear comfortable walking shoes; Ponte Pietra is cobbled and uneven.
Don’t forget your camera; the views from Ponte Pietra are some of the best in the city.
How to Get There
The Ponte Pietra was originally designed to provide access to the Roman Theatre, and it still serves that function today. Ponte Pietra is easily accessed on foot or by bike from Verona’s historic city center; it’s only a 5-minute walk from both Verona Cathedral or the Roman Theatre. The No. 31 bus also provides convenient access to Ponte Pietra.
When to Get There
The streets of Verona are packed with tourists from June through late-September. Ponte Pietra is one of Verona’s most popular attractions, so visit early in the morning if you wish to photograph the bridge without the tourist crowds. The entire city is less crowded during spring and fall.
Visiting Verona’s Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre and Archaeological Museum are located just across the Ponte Pietra bridge from Verona’s city center. Built into the hillside alongside the Adige River, this ancient Roman Theatre still hosts music concerts today and offers some of the most scenic views of the city. The on-site archaeological museum showcases important artifacts from Verona’s Roman past.
