Ponte Tancredo Neves
Av. Mercosul - Jardim Veraneio, Foz do Iguaçu, Argentina
Spanning the Paraná River, Ponte Tancredo Neves connects Brazil and Argentina. The bridge not only serves as an engineering marvel but also a symbol of the harmonious relationship between the two countries, which is why it’s often better known as the Friendship Bridge. You can walk, drive, or even cycle over the bridge to cross the border between countries.
The basics
While the bridge isn’t an attraction in its own right, it’s a symbolic stop on sightseeing tours of Foz do Iguaçu. Great ways to experience it include cycling tours that introduce you to Indigenous communities and sightseeing tours that take you to other top attractions, such as Catedral Diocesana Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, a hilltop cathedral renowned for its modern and innovative architecture.
Things to know before you go
There are sometimes vendors selling drinks and snacks on the bridge. On the banks surrounding it, you’ll find some cafés and restaurants as well.
Ponte Tancredo Neves is wheelchair accessible.
If you plan on crossing over into Argentina even just for a photo, you’ll need your passport to have it stamped.
How to get there
From Foz do Iguaçu International Airport, Ponte Tancredo Neves is seven miles (12 kilometers). It takes 20 minutes to drive there. No public buses cross the bridge due to border issues, so you’ll have to visit as part of a tour or have a taxi drop you off before the crossing.
When to get there
Ponte Tancredo Neves is always open. It’s a lovely place to watch the sunset over the Paraná River, though mosquitoes can be an issue at this time, so wear plenty of insect repellent.
Highlights of Foz do Iguaçu
Seeing the Iguaçu Falls is a must when visiting the small town of Foz do Iguaçu, but it’s not the only attraction. Other highlights include the Itaipu Dam, an enormous engineering marvel that you can explore on guided tours. Here, you’ll also find the Itaipu Biological Refuge, home to rescued and rehabilitated animals such as jaguars, toucans, and snakes.
