Port de Cassis
Quai des Moulins, Cassis, France, 13260
A charming town used as a port since Roman times, Cassis is an idyllic seaside escape in the South of France. Begin your adventure in the Port de Cassis area—seafood restaurants, historic buildings, and souvenir shops ring the vibrant fishing, leisure, and commercial port.
The basics
The bustling center of the action in a quaint seaside town, Port de Cassis is the ideal place to begin a sightseeing excursion in Cassis. The port offers waterfront views and proximity to beaches like the Plage du Bestouan and is dotted by numerous cafés and restaurants that you can visit day or night. Pick up beach gear and shop for souvenirs on the esplanade, or watch the local fishermen bring in the day's catch.
The Port de Cassis is the main departure point for boat trips and other sightseeing excursions in the area. Prebook tickets for tours visiting the neighboring Calanques National Park and other coastal highlights.
Things to know before you go
Try local seafood staples like bouillabaisse, anchoïade, and grilled fish at the port's restaurants.
Do like the locals do and grab a seat along the waterfront—it’s a great place to unwind, enjoy a snack, and soak up the sea breeze.
Much of the port area is open to the elements; come dressed for the weather and visit on a dry day if possible.
How to get there
The Port de Cassis is in the heart of town. Cassis’ main train station, the Gare de Cassis, is a quick trip north of the town center, and several direct buses link the two. Cassis is roughly 35 minutes by car from Marseille, 35 minutes from Toulon, and 50 minutes from Aix-en-Provence. Guided day trips with transit included offer another great way to get there.
When to get there
The best time to visit the Port de Cassis is in summer when the weather promises sun and warmth and local restaurants are open for business. However, note that weekends and the entire month of August will likely be crowded. Aim for the shoulder season for a calmer visiting experience.
Port-Miou
In addition to the main Port de Cassis, the town has a secondary port: Port-Miou. Located just west of the city center and in a calanque (a fjord-like inlet surrounded by limestone cliffs), the port is a scenic attraction and the departure point for kayaking excursions and other boat tours.
