Portela Viewpoint (Miradouro da Portela)

ER 108, Machico, Madeira, 9100

The Portela Viewpoint (Miradouro da Portela), nestled between Porto da Cruz and Machico, provides an unrivaled vantage point to marvel at the beautiful landscapes of Madeira. From mountains to villages, the sweeping coastal panorama showcases the island's captivating scenery. A visit to this lookout is a must, and dining at Restaurante Miradouro da Portela nearby will make it all the more memorable.

The basics

Many travel from Funchal to Portela by driving or taking the bus, but there’s a more adventurous option: walking along the Ribeiro-Frio-to-Portela trail. This 6.8-mile (11-kilometer) levada route, which ends at the Portela Viewpoint, is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts due to the stunning views, and it can get crowded during the peak season. Join the ranks of hikers who have conquered this scenic and rewarding path.

Things to know before you go

  • The Portela Viewpoint is accessible by car, bus, and hiking, so there are many options for reaching it.

  • The viewpoint is perfect as a sunset or sunrise spot, and is surprisingly quiet during these times.

  • Several hikes begin nearby, including PR5 Vereda das Funduras and PR10 Levada do Furado.

  • There is a restaurant near the viewpoint for a drink or meal.

How to get there

The Portela Viewpoint is on the main road between Machico and Porto da Cruz. While many hike there, you can also find affordable transportation: Local SAM bus no. 53 between Funchal and Faial stops right opposite the viewpoint. This runs a few times per day, but less often on weekends. The easiest way of reaching the view with minimal stress is by driving yourself—there's a parking lot on the side of the road—or joining a tour that stops there.

When to get there

The warm Mediterranean climate ushers in clear, sunny days for much of the year. The island truly comes to life in the hot summer months, though it may be a bit too warm for those who plan on hiking to the viewpoint. A nice alternative time is in spring, when the lush landscape is vibrant and days are milder.

A delight for photographers

With its prime location between Porto da Cruz and Machico, this observatory deck affords a sweeping view of the island's northern and eastern regions. The platform has a fenced area with seats for resting after the walk up. It offers a visual feast of the lush green valley, blue sea, and orange-tiled roofs scattered across the slopes of Porto da Cruz, making it an ideal photography spot for a panorama of Madeira's landscape.
