With its distinct concrete shape rising out of a plaza in the city center, the Pyramid of Tirana is a bizarre icon of the city. Though Albanians are ambivalent about the structure’s communist-era legacy, it represents Tirana’s complicated history.

Small-group and private walking tours visit the Pyramid of Tirana, and it is a common stop on day tours of the city; for convenience, book a tour that includes transport. Tours often also visit Blloku, the National Archaeological Museum, Et‘hem Bey Mosque, and the Presidential Palace (Pallati Presidencial).

How to Get There

The Pyramid of Tirana is centrally located in the city’s Blloku neighborhood. It is easily reached on foot from most places in the city center, though you can also take a taxi.

You can visit the Pyramid of Tirana at any time of day. The area often serves as an afternoon meeting point for locals to hang out. Arrive early in the day if you want to avoid crowds, or in the afternoon if you want to observe local life.

Climbing the Pyramid

Though the Pyramid of Tirana has been closed to the public for some time, the concrete structure’s exterior has become a popular place for urban adventurers. Many visitors try to scale the concrete walls of the pyramid and reach the top. While there are nice views, be careful, as the walls of the pyramid are steep.
