Pyramidenkogel Tower
Linden 62, Keutschach am See, Austria, 9074
An architectural wonder, this 325-foot (100-meter) tower is one of the world’s highest wooden viewing platforms, offering panoramas of Lake Wörthersee and Austria’s mountainous Carinthia region. You can climb its 441 steps, ride the elevator, soar across the Fly 100 zipline, or slide down the helter-skelter-style slide in 20 seconds.
The basics
The tower has one indoor and two outdoor viewing platforms with 360-degree views. To the north, you can see the Hohe Tauern and the lake valleys, while to the south, you can admire Italy and Slovenia. The Pyramidenkogel is away from Klagenfurt, so it isn’t on many tours. However, you can see it on Lake Wörthersee cruises. If you plan to sightsee in the area, combination tickets bundle tower admission with entry to Minimundus miniature world and a Lake Wörthersee cruise.
Things to know before you go
Standard admission tickets include access via the stairs or elevator. To use the slide or the Fly 100, there is an extra charge.
Children under six and visitors with the Kärtnen Card can enter for free.
On rainy days, the tower and the slide may be closed.
There is a minimum height restriction of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) to use the slide.
On the ground floor, there is a restaurant, a gift shop, and access to an outdoor playground.
The tower is considered wheelchair-accessible, with disabled parking spaces next to the building.
How to get there
The Pyramidenkogel is on the southern side of Lake Wörthersee, close to the towns of Maria Wörth, Reifnitz, and Keutschach am See. You can take a public bus from near the lido in Reifnitz from May through September, or you can drive there and leave your car in the on-site parking lot.
When to get there
The tower is open year-round from morning until late afternoon, with extended opening hours until dusk during the peak summer months (June–August). Last entry is always half an hour before the site closes. Summer weekends can be particularly busy with lines often forming for the slide. If you can visit in the week, there are usually fewer people.
Where to find more thrills at Aussichtsturm Pyramidenkogel
If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for the speedy way down after soaking up the views. The stainless slide departs from 170 feet (52 meters) but covers a distance double that in a spiral down to the ground. Use the speedometer to time your descent and capture the thrill with a photo. During the summer, you can also descend the Fly 100 zipline, which starts from a platform 230 feet (70 meters) in the air.
