A Tampere landmark, the Pyynikki Observation Tower is perched on top of the world's largest gravel ridge, which towers 500 feet (150 meters)) above sea level. The 85-foot (26-meter) red granite tower promises excellent views across Tampere and two lakes.
The basics
The Pyynikki Observation Tower opened on the 150th anniversary of the founding of Tampere City and has since become a beloved destination for visitors and locals. At the top, you can take in the views from indoor and outdoor platforms. The tower is also known for its first-floor coffee shop, which makes delicious munkki (cardamom donuts). The coffee shop’s donuts are reckoned by many to be the country’s best.
Things to know before you go
There is a small admission fee to enter the tower.
You can reach the top of the tower by climbing the 165-step spiral staircase or by taking the elevator.
The tower offers 360-degree views of Tampere from the top.
How to get there
The Observation Tower is in Pyynikki Park, a nature reserve between Tampere's city center and the Pispala neighborhood. From Tampere Central Square, you can walk for 25 minutes to reach the tower (although the walk is steep in parts) or take one of the buses departing from Keskustori C stop, including route numbers 4, 7, and 8.
When to get there
Lines to enter the Pyynikki Observation Tower are often long, so it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds. The tower and the coffee shop are open seven days a week, year-round with slightly extended opening hours in the summer.
What to do in Pyynikki Park
After visiting the observation tower, Pyynikki Park is a lovely setting for a stroll in nature. It’s a popular spot for locals who come here to walk dogs, jog, and have picnics. In the summer, you can even take a dip in one of the lakes and hang out on the beaches.
