Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboomwoud)
Aussenkehr
The stark beauty of the Namibian landscape is accentuated by the alien strangeness of the Quiver Tree Forest. With their root-like branches, the trees look nearly inverted, giving visitors the sense of walking through an upside-down forest. As a national monument, the forest holds enormous cultural and historical significance for Namibia.
The basics
Located in southern Namibia near the city of Keetmanshoop, the forest is a perfect stop on a driving tour of the country. It’s also close to the fascinating Giant’s Playground—a geological formation that looks like a giant building-block set. Take your time exploring the forest and pay close attention to the branches of the trees; the Indigenous San people used them to make quivers for arrows, giving the trees their name.
Things to know before you go
Bring plenty of water and good walking shoes—while it’s close to the city of Keetmanshoop, it’s a remote spot.
Be respectful of the trees and the site—not only is it a national monument, but the trees are considered blessed.
Bring binoculars to get a closer look at the birds and other animals that flock to the forest.
How to get there
Many tours in the region include a stop at the forest. Otherwise, it’s a great addition to a self-drive tour. From Keetmanshoop, it’s a 20-minute drive along the M29 highway.
When to get there
From June to July, the forest blooms with vibrant yellow flowers, drawing birds, insects, and other animals. This also coincides with the country’s dry season, when the days are dry and warm, with cold nights. Visit the forest during the early morning or evening for the added drama of sunrise or sunset.
Sleep under the stars
The nearby Quivertree Forest Rest Camp offers visitors the chance to unwind under the endless desert sky. Whether you opt for a simple campsite or a charming guesthouse, this working farm is the perfect place to experience Namibian hospitality. You’ll find working dogs, dassies, ground squirrels, and colorful birds as you explore the grounds.
