Rambla of Montevideo (Rambla de Montevideo)
Montevideo, Departamento de Montevideo, 11300
Stretching for almost 14 miles (more than 22 kilometers) along the coast of Montevideo, the Rambla of Montevideo is one of the world’s longest boardwalks and a buzzing epicenter of local life. Looking out across the Rio de la Plata, the palm-lined walkway serves up an ever-changing panorama of water views, verdant parks, and sandy beaches.
Things to know before you go
- The Rambla of Montevideo is one of the city’s must-visit attractions.
- There are various shops, restaurants, and hotels along the Rambla. Parking is available at several points, but it can get crowded in summer, so arrive early to snag a spot.
- There is very little shade along the path, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel if you’re heading to the beach, too!
- The paved Rambla is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, and separate walking and cycle lanes are marked out along much of the boardwalk.
How to get there
The Rambla runs the entire length of the Rio de la Plata coast in Montevideo, so wherever you are in the city, you’ll likely be within walking or cycling distance. If you don’t want to walk, the coastal roads also follow the same route as the Rambla, making it easy to drive the entire road.
When to get there
The Rambla is always vibrant with activity, but the crowds come out in force on sunny days, especially around the central beaches. A popular time to admire the views is at sunset; in the summer, joggers and dogwalkers prefer an early morning visit to avoid the midday heat.
Exploring Montevideo’s neighborhoods
The Rambla comprises 9 different sections linking several Montevideo neighborhoods. Starting in the west, enjoy views along the Bay of Montevideo, then continue through the atmospheric Old City (Ciudad Vieja) and the Downtown districts of Barrio Sur and Barrio Palermo. Some of the most popular beaches are in the Parque Rodó, Punta Carretas, and Pocitos districts, after which you’ll pass the ports of Buceo and Malvín before reaching the upmarket eastside neighborhoods of Punta Gorda and Carrasco.
