POINT OF INTEREST

Raqch'i

Via de Acceso Raqchi, Cusco, Peru, 08245

The Raqch’i Inca archeological site is a well-preserved collection of ancient structures that shed light on the lifestyle of the Incas. The site's highlight is the Templo de Viracocha, hailed as one of the holiest shrines in the Inca Empire. There are also many ruins of former houses and storage units.

The basics

Raqch’i is a popular stop between Cusco and Puno at Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world. The route is known as the Ruta del Sol thanks to its abundance of Incan attractions, and transfer services typically break up the journey with stops at the Andahuaylillas Church. This 17th-century structure is nicknamed the Sistine Chapel of the Andes because of the stunning frescoes and murals that decorate its ceiling and walls.

Things to know before you go

  • Sturdy shoes and sun hats are a must for exploring the site, which doesn’t feature much shade.

  • Raqch’i is 3.460 meters (11,351 feet) above sea level, so you might feel a little light-headed when you’re there due to the altitude. Drink plenty of water and take it easy.

  • You’ll need to pay an admission fee to enter the site.

How to get there

Raqch’i is 75 miles (120 kilometers) from Cusco—it takes around 2.5 hours to drive there via Route 3S. Coaches departing from Cusco bus station will likely pass by the ruins and stop there on request, but your best bet is taking a Ruta del Sol (Sun Route) transfer service that stops at the top attractions along the way.

When to get there

Raqch’i generally follows usual business hours from Monday through Sunday, but it's always worth checking in advance whether or not it’s open due to its remote location. Cusco’s rainy season runs from November through March, so it’s best to visit before then to ensure a dry day.

What to see on the Ruta del Sol

Along with the Raqch’i archeological site and the Andahuaylillas Church, the Ruta del Sol harbors natural and historical delights. El Paso de la Raya (Lightning Pass) marks the border between the Cusco and Puno regions and comprises snow-capped mountain peaks. The Litico de Pukara museum houses Inca ceramics and sculptures representing different religious animal figures.
