Reddell Beach
Minyirr, Broome, Western Australia, 6725
Framed by soaring red cliffs and strewn with rocky outcrops, Reddell Beach is one of Broome’s most photographed natural wonders. Named after Captain Reddell, who was killed on the beach by his mutinous crew during a pearling trip to Broome, the beach’s golden sands provide an idyllic escape, just minutes from the town.
The basics
Just a 10-minute drive from Broome, Reddell Beach has far fewer crowds than nearby Cable Beach, and its rocky shoreline and gentle waters are ideal for swimming and rock pooling. Leave yourself plenty of time to explore, hike along the coastal trails, and admire the beach’s orange-red rocks, which pop against the gleaming turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
Things to know before you go
The striking red cliffs make for some magnificent photos, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Reddell Beach is unpatrolled, and visitors swim at their own risk.
The beach is undeveloped with no facilities, so bring everything you need with you.
How to get there
Reddell Beach lies 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of Broome, about a 10-minute drive. There’s no public transportation to the town, so you’ll need to drive or to visit as part of a tour. The road to the beach is accessible only by 4WD.
When to get there
The best time to swim at Broome’s beaches is in the dry season (May through October)—jellyfish are common through the wet season. Pick a sunny afternoon for swimming and sunbathing, or time your visit to watch the sunrise or sunset over the rust-red cliffs.
Exploring Broome’s coastal peninsula
Broome’s coastal peninsula is home to its most popular beach, the white-sand Cable Beach, where swimming, sunbathing, and sunset camel rides keep the crowds busy. Follow the walking trail south of Cable Beach to Gantheaume Point, famous for its ocean views and ancient dinosaur footprints cast into the rocks. Continue along the coast to Reddell Beach and the boating departure point of the Broome jetty.
