POINT OF INTEREST

Rhine River Promenade (Rheinuferpromenade)

Rheinwerft, Düsseldorf, Rhine River, 40213

Walking the Rhine River Promenade (Rheinuferpromenade)—a 2-tier walkway that traces the scenic Rhine waterfront—not only offers a tranquil retreat from the busy city center, but also links many of Dusseldorf’s top attractions. Plus, it’s dotted with benches, grassy picnic areas, and food vendors, making it the ideal place to spend a sunny day.

The basics

Walking, cycling, and jogging tours of Dusseldorf often include the Rhine River Promenade, because there are plenty of points of interest along the way. Start your walk beneath the Burgplatz castle tower, then follow the riverside path through Dusseldorf Old Town, passing the Old Harbor (Alter Hafen) and the Marketplatz, home to the historic City Hall (Rathaus) and the City Museum (Stadt Museum). Then, you’ll reach the grassy Rheinpark, where you can admire the striking Media Harbor.

Things to know before you go

  • Boat cruises along the Rhine River also set sail from the Rhine River Promenade.

  • There are several bars, restaurants, and cafés along the Rhine River Promenade, where you can drink or dine with a view.

  • The Rhine River Promenade is a smooth, wide, straight path, making access easy for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The Rhine River Promenade (Rheinuferpromenade) runs along the eastern bank of the Rhine River in Dusseldorf Old Town, from the Media Harbor to the Burgplatz. The promenade is pedestrianized, although you can also cycle or rollerblade. It’s a short 5-minute walk from the Altstadt, or else bus 726 stops right nearby.

When to get there

Sunny days draw the crowds to the Rhine River Promenade, so don’t expect to have the views to yourself. Join the summer sunbathers at the Burgplatz stairs; swing by at sunset or after dark to admire the changing views; or time your visit with one of the seasonal events, such as the Christmas market.

Other things to do at Rhine River Promenade

As well as being popular with joggers, cyclists, and rollerbladers, the Rhine River Promenade also hosts a number of seasonal events, including an open-air cinema, exhibitions, and markets. The Burgplatz, at the north end of the promenade, hosts many of Dusseldorf’s cultural festivals, including Japan Day (May), Jazz Rally (June), and one of the city’s Christmas markets (Nov-Dec).
