How to get there

Ritigala Forest Monastery lies off the Habarana-Anuradhapura (A11) road in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, around 27 miles (43 kilometers) southeast of Anuradhapura. It’s not easy to find independently, so the easiest way here is to book a round-trip tuk-tuk or cab ride from Habarana or other towns. Alternatively, join a tour that includes transportation from Colombo, Habarana, or other tourist spots.

When to get there

The ruins are open from early morning to late afternoon daily, year-round, but it’s best to check the hours ahead as the site can close for religious holidays. The most comfortable conditions for exploring come during the dry season—typically May to September—which boasts pleasant, dry weather, plus lower humidity than other times of year.

Highlights at Ritigala Forest Monastery

While all the relics at Ritigala Forest Monastery are worth seeing, some stand out. The huge stone-stepped reservoir, with its empty pool now bursting with trees, is a highlight, as is the crumbled library perched on a promontory. Another must-see is the monastery’s ancient urinal stones: These flat stones are carved with drain holes and foot-shaped platforms, offering a humbling reminder of the everyday rituals of the monks.
