Ritigala Forest Monastery
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
Embedded in the mountain jungles of the Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve, the Ritigala Forest Monastery is one of central Sri Lanka’s under-the-radar stars. Overshadowed by nearby UNESCO-listed Anuradhapura, the remains of this first-century BC Buddhist monastery resemble illustrations from an adventure book, revealing tree-tangled reservoirs, broken pillars, and crumbled buildings along a hillside path.
The basics
Many visitors make their own way to Ritigala Forest Monastery to explore independently, paying the admission fee and climbing the path to stop off at the mystical ruins en route.
Alternatively, it’s possible to visit the Ritigala ruins on guided full-day excursions departing from Colombo or towns like Habarana. Most combine the site with a wildlife safari or attractions nearby like Pidurangala Rock. Many private multi-day Sri Lanka tours also stop by the ruins, as well as visiting destinations such as Anuradhapura and Kandy, on island-wide itineraries that include accommodation and transport. Wildlife lovers can also book Ritigala bird-watching walks or nature treks that stop here.
Things to know before you go
Ritigala Forest Monastery will delight history, nature, walking, and photography buffs.
Plan to spend 2–4 hours here, depending on your interest and fitness.
Pack sturdy shoes or trainers, sunscreen, a sunhat, and bottled water.
The ruins are inaccessible to wheelchair-users.
A public restroom is located near the entrance gate.
How to get there
Ritigala Forest Monastery lies off the Habarana-Anuradhapura (A11) road in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, around 27 miles (43 kilometers) southeast of Anuradhapura. It’s not easy to find independently, so the easiest way here is to book a round-trip tuk-tuk or cab ride from Habarana or other towns. Alternatively, join a tour that includes transportation from Colombo, Habarana, or other tourist spots.
When to get there
The ruins are open from early morning to late afternoon daily, year-round, but it’s best to check the hours ahead as the site can close for religious holidays. The most comfortable conditions for exploring come during the dry season—typically May to September—which boasts pleasant, dry weather, plus lower humidity than other times of year.
Highlights at Ritigala Forest Monastery
While all the relics at Ritigala Forest Monastery are worth seeing, some stand out. The huge stone-stepped reservoir, with its empty pool now bursting with trees, is a highlight, as is the crumbled library perched on a promontory. Another must-see is the monastery’s ancient urinal stones: These flat stones are carved with drain holes and foot-shaped platforms, offering a humbling reminder of the everyday rituals of the monks.
