Roseau Old Market

Roseau

Located behind the Dominica Museum in Roseau, this atmospheric covered market along the seafront sells fresh fruits, spices, handmade knickknacks, and typical tourist souvenirs and t-shirts. Carrying a history of over 300 years, the market was the setting for important political meetings, the center of the island’s colonial slave trade, and where executions were carried out.

The Basics

Next to the dock where cruise ships arrive, this busy market in a cobblestone plaza is frequented by locals as well as transient passengers snapping photos and perusing the wooden stalls filled with tropical fruits, spices, coffee, leather goods, woven baskets, and various trinkets.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Roseau Old Market is an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts and shoppers.
  • Gentle bargaining while purchasing souvenirs and handicrafts is expected.
  • Go to the crafts store opposite Ruins Rock Cafe to find the most authentic handicraft items from the island.
  • The market is covered, so expect to be protected from the sun or rain.

How to Get There

The Roseau Old Market is located on King George V Street in the old part of Dominica’s capital city, Roseau. The market is easy walking distance from the cruise ship terminal, and any other landmark in town.

When to Get There

The market is open daily from the morning until the afternoon. Come early in the morning when the locals shop for produce, especially on Saturdays when the market is a weekly event.xa0Most travelers plan a visit to Dominica during the dry season, from January through April. Come for Carnival in January or February or any of the many arts, jazz, and flower festivals throughout the year.

Dominica Museum

After the market, walk over to this compact museum located just above the tourist office close to the cruise ship pier. Lennox Honeychurch, the Dominica’s most famous historian is in charge of the museum’s collections, which include objects relating to the socio-cultural history, archaeology, and geology of the island. Of special interest are the artifacts from Dominica's indigenous cultures and the displays about the island’s volatile volcanology.
