The gardens are open daily, although opening times vary throughout the year. Each season brings its own unique colors, but springtime is particularly beautiful with the flower gardens in full bloom. Summer is also a popular time to visit, with a number of events and temporary exhibitions held in the park. The gardens are also a popular spot to watch Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.

The gardens offer numerous leafy walkways and harbor lookouts, including Mrs. Macquarie’s Bushland Walk, which leads to the Mrs. Macquarie's Chair viewpoint. Highlights of the gardens include the Aboriginal First Encounters Garden, the Rain Forest Garden, the Palace Rose Garden, and the Succulent Garden.
