Amid the hilly suburbs of Queens Domain, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens offer an idyllic stretch of greenery, dotted with tree-lined walkways, lily ponds, and flower-filled conservatories. Dating back to 1818 and stretching over 35 acres (14 hectares; it’s one of Australia’s oldest botanical gardens.

The basics

Stroll around the gardens at your own pace or join a guided tour to learn more about the different plant and flower varieties from around the world. Highlights include the Japanese Garden, the French Memorial Garden, the traditional herb garden, and the lily pond, which blooms with over 20 different varieties of lilies throughout spring and summer. Spot rare plants from Macquarie Island at the Subantarctic Plant House; admire historic landmarks such as Arthur Wall and the Anniversary Arch; or dine at the on-site restaurant, where food is sourced from the Tasmanian Community Food Garden.

*The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are a fun destination for kids, who will enjoy exploring the ponds, bridges, and winding walkways. *There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome. *There is a restaurant, gift shop, and picnic areas at the gardens; most of the paths and greenhouses are easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The gardens are located on Lower Domain Road in Queens Domain, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of downtown Hobart. There is no public transport directly to the park, but it’s an about 5-minute drive or taxi ride from downtown, and free parking is available. Active types can also walk up to the gardens—about a 20-minute walk from the center.

When to get there

The botanical gardens are open daily all year round, although closing times vary throughout the year. If you can, it’s worth revisiting to experience the gardens’ changing seasons, from springtime blooms to colorful fall foliage. In the summer months, opt for a morning visit to make the most of the cooler weather, then stick around to enjoy a picnic or lunch at the restaurant.

The area around the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is Hobart’s main recreational district, home to numerous parks and sports centers. Explore the Domain’s many hiking and cycling trails, follow the Queens Domain Summit Track up to the Domain’s highest point, or head to Legacy Park, where the huge adventure playground is a favorite among kids. There’s also the Hobart Aquatic Centre, the Hobart International Tennis Centre, the Domain Athletic Centre, and the Hobart TCA (cricket) Ground.
