Sabarmati Ashram
Ashram Road, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, 380027
Ahmedabad’s Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati is a fascinating destination for Indian history enthusiasts and anyone interested in spirituality and concepts of nonviolence. The Indian freedom fighter was from Gujarat and spent many years living at the ashram with his wife. Now, visitors can stroll through the grounds, browse the museum, or even do historical research in the archives located here.
The basics
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a pivotal leader in the struggle for Indian independence against British colonialism, which was finally achieved in 1947. The Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati is a peaceful and atmospheric place to learn about India’s fight for freedom and Gandhi’s life and philosophy of ahimsa, or nonviolence. There are many different buildings throughout the grounds, most of which are open-air. The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya museum was constructed at the ashram in the 1960s.
The ashram features on many guided tours of Ahmedabad, but travelers can also visit independently. You can combine a trip with other attractions north of central Ahmedabad, such as the Adalaj Stepwell (Adalaj ni Vav) in the village of Adalaj.
Things to know before you go
- The ashram is a must-visit for anyone interested in Indian history.
- Most of the ashram is accessible, but wheelchair users may need some assistance in the outdoor areas.
- The ashram is a sacred place to many people, so visitors are asked to behave and dress respectfully, not to smoke or drink alcohol here, and to keep their voices down.
- Admission is free, although donations are welcome.
- Visitors are allowed to take photos in the ashram, but they should be for personal use only and respect the privacy of other visitors.
How to get there
The ashram is located in northern Ahmedabad beside the Sabarmati River, about 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) from the central city. The easiest way to travel is by taxi—the journey should take about 10 minutes, depending on traffic.
When to get there
The ashram is open daily, including on public holidays, from mid-morning until early evening. As it’s located a few miles from central Ahmedabad, avoid traveling in the late afternoon or early evening, when traffic is typically heaviest. Most people prefer to visit Ahmedabad between October and March, as the weather is cooler. The anniversary of Gandhi’s death is on January 30, so special events are sometimes held at the ashram then.
Visit Gandhi’s birthplace in Porbandar
Gandhi was born in the coastal city of Porbandar, about 240 miles (390 kilometers) from Ahmedabad. If you’re interested in learning more about his life, check out his birthplace in Porbandar and see his former home, Kirti Mandir, and a small museum.
