POINT OF INTEREST

San Antonio Valley

San Antonio Valley, Santiago, Valparaíso

Among Chile's youngest wine regions, the San Antonio Valley is growing in popularity and is particularly celebrated for its pinot noir and sauvignon blanc. This cool-weather region is blessed by crisp winds from the Pacific Ocean, which helps create the perfect conditions for grapes to ripen slowly.

The basics

Most of the wineries in this region work on a more modest scale, from Matetic Vineyard, which specializes in biodynamic viticulture, to Casa Marin, where visitors are invited to harvest their own grapes. While many wine tours from Santiago take visitors to other regions, such as the Maipo Valley, there are a few options that head straight to the heart of this burgeoning region.

Things to know before you go

  • Make sure to drink plenty of water, as wine tasting can be dehydrating.

  • Some tours to the region include walking out into vineyards, so comfortable shoes are a must.

  • There are plenty of places to eat in the San Antonio Valley, and some wineries provide snacks to keep you going during tastings.

How to get there

The San Antonio Valley is about 1 hour from Santiago, as well as from Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. Public transportation is limited, taxis can get expensive, and driving your own car after drinking is not safe, so it's a good idea to go as part of a guided wine-tasting tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

If weather is your biggest concern, consider visiting the San Antonio Valley during summer or early fall, from December through April. Grapes are generally harvested in late winter or early autumn, but if you want to visit during harvest time, it's best to check with individual wineries about ideal timings, or get in touch with your tour guide.

Matetic Vineyard

In the heart of the San Antonio Valley, Matetic Vineyard is a great place to start your wine experience. This family-run spot specializes in biodynamic viticulture, and tours of the winery are a great way to learn about alternative grape-growing practices firsthand. Best of all, their tours all include tastings.
