San Benedetto Market

Francesco Cocco Ortu St. 46, Cagliari, Italy, 09128

With hundreds of colorful market stalls crowding two floors and piled high with everything from seasonal produce to fish plucked directly from the Mediterranean Sea, Cagliari’s San Benedetto Market is one of the largest indoor marketplaces in Italy. This homage to Sardinian culture and cuisine is an ideal spot for mingling with local shoppers and sampling island specialties.

The basics

The San Benedetto Market is spread across two levels. The ground floor is given over to dozens of fishmongers, many of whom sell fresh fish and seafood that they have caught themselves in the early morning hours. Upstairs, bakeries and greengrocers are mixed with butchers and stalls dedicated to organic produce, candy, and other gastronomic delights. Many Cagliari walking tours and food tours take a turn through the market to soak in the lively atmosphere and taste Sardinian delicacies.

Things to know before you go

  • The market is a great place to stock up on Sardinian gourmet souvenirs. Check which products you can import to your home country before purchasing; however, some may restrict items such as meat and fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Colorful stalls (and vendors) make for spectacular photos, but remember to ask permission before photographing people.

  • You don’t need reservations to visit the market, so it’s a great spur-of-the-moment stop while exploring Cagliari’s city center.

  • Stock up on cheeses and cold cuts, fresh bread, fruit, olives, and other picnic fare for lunch on the go.

  • There is an elevator to reach the upper floor of the market, ideal for visitors using wheelchairs or strollers.

How to get there

The San Benedetto Market is in the heart of the San Benedetto district on Via Cocco Ortu, about a 20-minute walk from Cagliari’s historical center. You can also reach the San Benedetto market by CTM bus along the M line; get off at the Bacaredda—Mercato Civico stop.

When to get there

Plan on visiting the San Benedetto Market as early in the morning as possible to see it as its liveliest—the market is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 1pm. Keep in mind that fishing boats generally don’t go out on Sundays, so the ground-floor fishmongers are very quiet on Monday mornings.

What to buy at the San Benedetto Market

It’s always fun to browse the market stalls at the San Benedetto Market. Unfortunately, a large part of the wares on offer cannot be imported to many countries, so bypass the fish and meat counters, as well as the cold cuts and fresh cheeses. Instead, focus on items such as wine, olive oil, honey, pane carasau (a type of cracker-like bread), and fregola or malloreddus (local pasta shapes).
