POINT OF INTEREST

Sand City Hurghada

Safaga road, Hurghada 1, Red Sea Governorate, 1962001

On the outskirts of Hurghada, Sand City boasts around 60 giant sand artworks in an open-air park. Created by talented global artists, the works span everything from giant sculptures of ancient pyramids and pharaohs to reliefs of mythical beings and cartoon characters. A kids’ sand-sculpture workshop area and souvenir stalls complete the picture, promising a fun family outing.

The basics

At the sculpture park, stroll the Historical Art zone to admire huge statues of Giza’s Great Sphinx and Great Pyramid, as well as famous figures such as Napoleon, and walk around the Wonderland Art section to see carvings of beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Spiderman, and Shrek. Kids can also try out simple sand-sculpting in the workshop space.

An easy way to visit is by booking a private Sand City tour from Hurghada; packages typically include entry tickets and hotel pickup and drop-off. You could also opt for a private Hurghada sightseeing tour, which includes stops at Sand City and highlights like Hurghada Marina and the Al Mina Mosque.

Things to know before you go

  • Sand City is popular with art-loving visitors of all ages, and anyone wanting a break from the beach.
  • There’s an admission fee to the park.
  • Plan on spending between 30 minutes and 1 hour here.
  • Sand City is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
  • On-site amenities include souvenir stalls, a coffee shop, and restrooms.
  • There is little shade in the park, so wear sunscreen and a sunhat.

How to get there

Sand City stands on the western side of the El-Nasr highway, across the road from the Sunrise Crystal Bay Resort, about a 22-minute drive south of Hurghada’s center. The park also lies immediately north of the Senzo Mall roundabout, where Hurghada’s Safaga Road meets the 65M. The most convenient way to go is by cab, using a ridesharing app like Uber or Careem, or joining an organized tour.

When to get there

Sand City is open daily, typically from morning to early evening. The park is usually quiet, but it’s best to visit close to opening time, or during the late afternoon or early evening, to avoid Egypt’s fierce midday and early-afternoon sun.

When to get there

After checking out Sand City, head to the nearby Senzo Mall, a 5-minute cab ride or 10-minute walk from the back of the park. This air-conditioned mall offers a cool oasis after walking around the outdoor sand sculptures. You’ll find more than 70 shops here, together with restaurants, cafés, and fast-food outlets, so it’s a perfect place to relax, pick up souvenirs, and refuel.
