Sanghi Temple
Hyderabad, India
The Sanghi Temple is an intricately carved white marble Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, Parvati, and Venkateswara. Built in 1991 in the Chola-Chalukya architectural style, it blends architectural features from two ancient South Indian empires. It's situated on the top of Paramananda Giri Hill, about 22 miles (35 kilometers) southeast of Hyderabad.
The basics
Visit the Sanghi Temple for a moment of quiet reflection or to admire its sculptures or the view from its hilltop perch. While it attracts a lot of religious travelers, it's also a popular stop if you're en route to nearby Ramoji Film City, a gargantuan film complex located less than 10 minutes away from the temple by car. Many tours from Hyderabad visit both attractions in one day. Tours are typically private and include hotel pickup.
Things to know before you go
- The Sanghi Temple is a must for pilgrims and travelers interested in temple architecture.
- Out of respect for local traditions, dress modestly and be prepared to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
- Temple facilities include a canteen and a counter serving prasad (blessed sweets) and selling souvenirs.
How to get there
The Sanghi Temple is situated in the town of Sanghi Nagar, around a 60- to 90-minute drive southeast of Hyderabad. The closest train station is the Ghatkesar Railway Station, about a 40-minute drive. If you’re coming from Hyderabad, your best bet is to visit on a tour that includes transportation or hire a taxi to take you there and back.
When to get there
The Sanghi Temple is open throughout the year from morning until well after dark, with an extended break in the early afternoon for lunch and rest (there are no mid-day closings on Sundays and holidays). The best time to visit is first thing in the morning if you want to beat crowds or in the evening when the temple is often lively.
Visiting Ramoji Film City
Even if you aren't crazy about movies, you'll likely get a kick out of visiting Ramoji Film City. This 1,666-acre (674-hectare) expanse is among the world's largest film complexes and lets you see sets where many blockbuster Tollywood (Telugu-language) films have been shot. Other highlights include rides, live entertainment, play areas for kids, and plenty of dining options.
