Sarnath

Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, 221007

Just outside Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Many believe that it was in this very town that Gautama Siddhartha first taught after reaching enlightenment, and it's an excellent place to visit if you want to learn about the history of Buddhism.

The basics

Sarnath is considered one of four pilgrimage sites in the subcontinent, and attracts a steady stream of pilgrims and non-devout tourists alike. Important sites include the Dhamek Stupa, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, along with the towering Chaukhandi Stupa. The Archaeological Museum Sarnath is another must-see, housing some of the country's most important artifacts, including the Lion Capital of Ashoka, a column of four lions that appears on the National Emblem of India.

Things to know before you go

  • Make sure to wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders if you plan to visit any stupas or other religious sites.
  • You'll need to remove your shoes before entering any religious sites, so it’s best to wear footwear that’s easy to slip on and off.
  • The sun can be brutal in this part of India, so make sure to wear sun protection, even on cloudy days.
  • Many of Sarnath's attractions will prove challenging for wheelchair users, but the Archaeological Museum has a ramp and accessible toilets.

How to get there

Sarnath is about a 25-minute drive from the heart of old Varanasi, or a 15-minute drive from the Varanasi City railway station. While you can take a train to the Sarnath Railway Station and then walk for 15 minutes to get to the main attractions, it's much easier to visit by taxi or as part of a tour. Most one-day and multi-day tours of Varanasi include a trip out to Sarnath.

When to get there

The best time to visit Sarnath is between October and March, when the weather is at its most pleasant. Temperatures soar from April until June, then cool down a bit in late June, when the July–September monsoon season starts. If you don't mind the heat, consider visiting for the annual Buddha Purnima, which honors the birth of the Buddha; it usually takes place in April or May.

Bodh Gaya

Travelers interested in Buddhism often combine a visit to Sarnath with a trip to Bodh Gaya, about a 6-hour drive away. This small city is best known for the UNESCO World Heritage–recognized Mahabodhi Temple, situated on the spot where the Buddha is believed to have reached enlightenment. In front of the temple stands a large bodhi tree, believed to be a descendant of the original tree under which enlightenment was attained.
