Savanne District
Savanne District
The southernmost of Mauritius’ nine districts, the scenic Savanne District is known for its rugged, unspoiled scenery, idyllic beaches, and several major cultural attractions. Seaside resort towns such as Souillac and Bel Ombre offer a more traditional tropical getaway experience. However, it’s worth venturing to inland natural wonders like the Black River Gorges National Park.
The basics
Home to dramatic scenery and craggy vistas, the southerly Savanne District offers many experiences. Nature lovers can explore the Black River Gorges National Park, the rocky splendor of Gris Gris Beach, and the vibrant landscapes of La Vallée Des Couleurs Nature Park or see highlights like Rochester Falls and the Chamarel Waterfall. On the cultural side, visit the Bois Cheri Tea Factory or Ganga Talao, the island's most sacred Hindu site.
The Savanne District is accessible to active, independent travelers, and you can also explore it as part of a group tour. Full-day tours make it easy to visit several top attractions in one outing, while boat tours and quad bike excursions offer more active ways to explore.
Things to know before you go
Gris Gris Beach is not recommended for swimming, owing to its big waves and strong currents, though area beaches are popular among professional surfers.
If you plan to get out in nature, come prepared with hiking boots that can handle the rough terrain, sun protection, and bug spray.
The Savanne District is also home to the Heritage Golf Club, one of the world’s most in-demand destination golf courses.
How to get there
The Savanne District encompasses the southernmost region of Mauritius. Its largest settlement and district seat is Souillac, roughly a 35-minute drive from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (located just across the border of the neighboring Grand Port District). Local bus services are available, but taxis, rental cars, and guided tours offer the easiest way to get around.
When to get there
Mauritius is considered a year-round destination, thanks to its relatively consistent climate, and that’s generally true of the Savanne District. The high season is in Mauritius’ summer (December–February) and is the best time to get out on the water, while the spring and autumn shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds. Winter (June–August), when seas are rough and winds high, is best avoided.
Macondé View Point
The Savanne District is home to many charms and wonders, and one of its highlights is the Macondé View Point, located at the district’s southwesternmost tip. Offering one of the region’s most impressive coastal views, it’s a must-visit stop for photographers. And the B9—the seaside road that leads to it—has been ranked one of the world’s most scenic drives.
