Schaezlerpalais

Maximilianstraße 46, Augsburg, Germany, 86150

This baroque Schaezlerpalais boasts art collections and gardens, but it’s the rococo ballroom that really takes the crown. A glittering affair that features mirrors, gilding, and frescoes, it was created for a visit by Marie-Antionette before her wedding and harks back to Augsburg’s 18th-century heyday.

The basics

The Schaezlerpalais entrance fee covers admission to the public rooms and galleries, including the ballroom, or you can buy combination tickets that allow entry to any special exhibitions. You can visit the gardens for free without a ticket. There are on-site guided tours that can be organized directly with the palace, or you can book a private Augsburg tour. Some tours include the admission fee, while most offer insight into the history of the ballroom and the art collections. Private tours often visit other historic Augsburg sites, such as the Fuggerei, Augsburg Town Hall, and the Zeughaus Armory.

Things to know before you go

  • Large bags and wet-weather items must be left in the cloakroom when you enter. Lockers are also available.

  • Selfie sticks are not permitted, but you can take photos without a flash.

  • Food and drink can only be brought into the palace gardens.

  • The site is not fully accessible for wheelchair users; contact the palace directly for full details.

How to get there

The Schaezlerpalais is in downtown Augsburg and is easily accessible on foot. If travelling by public transit, take the city tram lines or buses to the Königsplatz or Moritzplatz stops—both are a short walk away. Parking places are limited nearby, but the Bleigässchen parking garage is a 5-minute walk.

When to get there

The site is open Tuesday to Sunday year-round, from mid-morning until late afternoon. There are select closures for German public vacation days and religious festivals. As with many Augsburg visitor attractions, the palace tends to be quietest in the morning.

Baroque design in Augsburg

If the glitz of the Schaezlerpalais ballroom has whet your appetite for baroque glamor, check out the nearby Golden Hall in Augsburg Town Hall. Unlike the Schaezlerpalais, the building suffered heavy wartime damage, but the Golden Hall has been restored to its original splendor with a reconstructed coffered ceiling and added gold embellishments.
