Segantini Museum
Via Somplaz 30, St. Moritz, Swiss Alps, 7500
Paying homage to Giovanni Segantini, the Segantini Museum showcases the Italian painter’s 19th-century canvas paintings of the Swiss Engadin Alps. Go there to admire yesteryear alpine scenes—long before St. Moritz found fame—and to learn a little about the man himself. His unfinished triptych La Vita, La Natura, La Morte (Life, Nature, and Death) is the standout piece.
The basics
The small, well-curated gallery is set in a cupola-topped stone building that’s impressive in its own right. Segantini’s works are displayed across three rooms. While most St. Moritz tours skip this attraction, it’s easy to visit independently from the main village. If you’re an art fan on an Engadine Alps day trip or a Bernina Express tour with free time in St. Moritz, the museum is a lovely place to escape the skiing and shopping crowds.
Things to know before you go
The Segantini Museum is wheelchair-accessible. Plan for a visit of around an hour, as the museum is small. You can pay extra for an audio guide that explains the key sights. Guided tours are available outside of the main opening hours. These last around 45 minutes, and should be organized directly with the museum.
How to get there
The Segantini Museum is just outside central St. Moritz on Via Somplatz, the road that connects the village to the Suvretta neighborhood. It’s 10 minutes on foot from the center, or you can take the public bus 2 from St. Moritz Schulhausplatz in the direction of Surlej—just ask the driver where to hop off. Drivers can pay to leave their cars in the parking lot Via Somplatz.
When to get there
The museum’s summer season runs from mid-May to mid-October, while the winter season runs from early December to mid-April. During these periods, the doors are open from mid-morning to early evening every day except Mondays. There are extra closures for holidays such as New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, Easter, and Pentecost.
How to walk the *Segantini Sentiero* (Segantini Trail)
If you have more time in St. Moritz and you like walking, add the Segantini Sentiero to your list of things to do. This trail was set up to link the Engadin Valley locations related to Giovanni Segantini. On the stage between St. Moritz and Muottas Muragl, walkers can reach the high-altitude Segantini Hut where the painter died while working on the Nature piece of his famous alpine triptych.
