How to get there

Selime Monastery is located 17.4 miles (28 kilometers) from Aksary, at the end of the Ilhara Valley in the Cappadocia region. You can take an easy 2-hour hike from the Village of Ilhara, along the Melendiz River, passing Belisirma Village, rock-hewn caves, and churches to the Selime Monastery. But the most common way to visit is on a day tour from Goreme, which combines stops at other attractions in the area.

Although the monastery is open to the public year-round, there are certain times of the year that are more enjoyable than others. If you’re looking for the perfect time to visit, consider the spring or autumn months. During these times, the weather is mild, and you can walk through the monastery without worrying about the harsh sun and unpleasant heatwaves. Built into the rock formations of the side of a mountain, the monastery holds a remarkable appeal for movie makers. George Lucas was heavily inspired by the landscapes around Selime Monastery for his first Star Wars films. Although he wasn’t granted permission to film on-site, it is said that the otherworldly terrain was attempted to be replicated in other countries like Tunisia.
