Selimiye
Selimiye, Marmaris, Muğla, 48700
Selimiye is a quaint coastal town in the Mugla province of Turkey (officially the Republic of Türkiye). Situated between Marmaris and Datca, it boasts a picturesque harbor with locally crafted fishing boats, a quiet seaside, and a handful of ancient ruins. Selimiye offers travelers an opportunity to experience authentic Turkish life away from the bustle of more touristy cities nearby.
The basics
While Selimiye offers several guest houses, most visitors only stop by for an afternoon or a full day of sightseeing. The most enjoyable way to visit is by sea on a boat tour from Marmaris. These aquatic excursions typically stop at the secluded Sig Milan Beach for swimming and snorkeling before continuing to the village. Many also include lunch and hotel pickup and drop-off. Independent travelers may prefer to rent a car or take public transportation from Marmaris or Datca.
Surrounded by rugged terrain, Greek ruins, and lush foliage, Selmiye is also a popular destination for Jeep safari tours from Marmaris, which typically stop at several surrounding villages, as well as the nearby Turgut Waterfall. As with the boat tours stopping in Selimiye, round-trip hotel transportation and a full meal are typically included.
Things to know before you go
Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as the sun can be intense in summer.
English is not widely spoken in Selimiye, so learning a few basic Turkish phrases is helpful.
Cash is preferred in local shops and restaurants, so bring some Turkish lira.
How to get there
Selimiye is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Marmaris and 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Datca. The easiest way to get to the village is by car or taxi, but many prefer to experience the town on a boat tour from Marmaris. This enables you to avoid winding mountain roads and appreciate Selimiye from an ideal vantage point.
When to get there
The best time to visit Selimiye is during the summer months, between June and September, when the weather is warm and sunny. It’s also pleasant in the spring and fall, when crowds are thinner and temperatures are cooler. Avoid visiting from November to February, as the weather can be chilly, gray, and windy.
Add a day in Greece to your Turkish adventure
The Greek island of Rhodes is just a 1-hour ferry ride from nearby Marmaris, so it’s easy for visitors to spend a day indulging in the island’s pristine beaches, ancient ruins, and classic Greek cooking. You can explore the island independently or maximize your time on an organized tour.
