Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street

The basics

Osaka is known regionally as the “kitchen of the nation.” So it’s only natural that there would be an entire structure dedicated to eating. Originally a section of pilgrimage route between Hozenji Temple to the north and Shitennoji Temple to the south, Sennichimae Doguyasuji began to transform into a commercial shopping area by the late 1800s.

The shopping arcade is where many of Osaka’s chefs go to purchase cookware and other kitchen equipment, and is where you’ll find (and perhaps purchase) the plastic food replicas seen in restaurant window displays across Japan.

Things to know before you go

• The arcade is wheelchair accessible although the single-lane path can get congested during high-traffic times.
• Some of the shops offer special workshops where you might paint a paper lantern or learn how to prepare a dish. Inquire within.
• Fresh food market Kuromon Ichiba is roughly a 6-minute walk east of Sennichimae Doguyasuji and is also worth a visit.

How to get there

Sennichimae Doguyasuji is a 3-minute walk from Nankai Namba station on the Nankai Railway. You can reach this stop via the Osaka Metro Midosuji and Yotsubashi lines. You can also reach the shopping street via the Kintetsu Railway on the Sennichimae line. Get off at Nippombashi station and from there it's roughly a 5-minute walk.

When to get there

The shopping arcade is open daily from around 10am to 6pm, although vendors may open storefronts at different times. Consider planning your visit during the annual Doguyasuji Festival. Held annually on October 9, the kitchen equipment-laden shops offer incredible sales on inventory, as well as street-side cooking and knife-sharpening demonstrations.

Whether you are looking for a bite to eat or want to do a bit of window shopping, a stroll through this covered market is a feast for the eyes and stomach. Kuromon Ichiba is famous for its fresh seafood stalls and for the many stall owners and chefs that will prepare, cook, and serve food on the spot.
