Sesriem Canyon

The basics

Located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the canyon is a favorite spot for those on self-drive tours, as well as visitors on longer safaris. You’ll find a parking lot near the entrance to the canyon, and there are a number of campsites and lodges nearby if you’re interested in spending more time in the park.

Things to know before you go

• Bring close-toed shoes and plenty of water—the desert heats up quickly, and you don’t want hot sand in your shoes.

• You’ll need to pay a fee at the entrance gate to the park in order to access the canyon.

• Take your camera along to capture the unique rock formations.

How to get there

Namib-Naukluft National Park is a 4-hour drive from the city of Windhoek along the C26 highway, and many tours of the park departing from Windhoek include a stop at the canyon. For those staying in the region, the canyon is a 5-minute drive from the small Sesriem settlement where you’ll find accommodation options and several basic shops for supplies.

When to get there

Arrive early before the desert heats up to get the most out of your time. For the option to explore the canyon more fully, visit during the dry season, which runs from May to October. While the days are warm during the dry season, the nights get very cold, so make sure to pack layers.

Get a jump on the day, and avoid a wait at the entrance, by staying at one of the rest camps within the park itself—Sesriem Oshana Campsite offers unpretentious comfort with its shaded campgrounds, private shower facilities, BBQ spots, and a swimming pool where you can float under the desert sky.
