Nature lovers will find plenty to marvel at in the Azores, but the otherworldly volcanic landscape of São Miguel Island’s Sete Cidades is one of the archipelago’s most magnificent natural wonders. The massive caldera has two lakes: one blue and one green.
The Basics
Sete Cidades has several walking trails, including a circuit of the dormant volcano’s rim, and routes leading down to the water’s edge. One of the best views of the lakes is from the King’s View (Vista do Rei) lookout, named after King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia to celebrate their visit to the island in 1901. Alternatively, take in the view by car or all-terrain vehicle—or join a guided tour with transport included.

How to Get There
Sete Cidades is about a 30-to-40-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, São Miguel’s main city. Public transit is scarce, so if you don’t have a car, a guided tour is your best bet.
When to Get There
If possible, visit Sete Cidades on a sunny day to truly appreciate the view and striking colors of the lakes. To beat the crowds at one of the Azores’ most popular attractions, get there early or late in the day, if the weather is in your favor.
Termas da Ferraria
Afterward, unwind from all your adventuring and stop by the natural Termas da Ferraria, a 25-minute drive from Sete Cidades. Seawater mingles with volcanic hot springs, promising an especially soothing dip—some even claim that the combination of saltwater and sulfurous spring water helps with conditions such as arthritis.
