Seven Lakes Road

Ruta Nacional 40, San Martin de los Andes, Neuquén, Q8370

If you’re planning a road trip through Argentina’s Lake District, this 65-mile (108-kilometer) stretch is hands down the most scenic route. Following National Route 40 between San Martin de los Andes and Villa La Angostura, the easily accessible road takes you past mountains, beech forests, and waterfalls, along with two national parks and some of Patagonia’s most beautiful alpine lakes.

The basics

Driving the Seven Lakes Road takes about three to 3.5 hours. The speed limit is 25 mph (40 kph). You’ll want to make plenty of stops to admire the views, take photos, or enjoy fishing, swimming, and hiking. Most road-trippers set out from San Martin de los Andes or Bariloche and explore the road on a long day trip. Either rent a car or join a guided tour that visits all seven lakes.

Things to know before you go

  • Hikers can choose from several short treks and day or multi-day hikes in the Nahuel Huapi and Lanín National Parks.

  • While day trips are most popular, a multi-day trip allows you to explore further, including detours to additional lakes, hiking trails, and viewpoints.

  • You’ll find camping and accommodation options along the road, but there are no gas stations or shops, so buy everything you need before setting out.

  • There are wheelchair-accessible viewpoints at all of the seven lakes.

How to get there

You can drive the Seven Lakes Road in either direction, heading south from San Martín de Los Andes or north from Villa La Angostura. The closest airport is Bariloche, about a 75-minute drive to Villa La Angostura. There is no public transport to the lakes, so you’ll need your own transportation or to join a tour.

When to get there

The road is typically accessible year-round, although winter travelers should expect snow and ice on the road—you’ll need a suitable vehicle. Spring and summer (September–March) are the most popular times to visit as the weather is ideal for outdoor activities, and it’s often warm enough to swim. However, the route gets busy in summer and on holiday weekends, with traffic around the lakes and viewpoints.

The “seven lakes” of Patagonia

Seven Lakes Road is named for its seven largest lakes, but you’ll see many other lakes along the route. From north to south, you’ll first stop at Machónico Lake, followed by Falkner Lake with its cascading waterfall, and Villarino Lake, a popular fishing spot. The “hidden lake” of Escondido is tucked away in the forest, while neighboring Espejo and Correntoso Lakes are magnets for summer swimmers. Nahuel Huapi Lake is the national park's focal point.
