Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum (FBQ Museum)
Al Samariyah, Doha, Qatar
A privately-owned museum showcasing Sheikh Faisal’s collection of Islamic and Qatari cultural artifacts, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum (FBQ Museum) offers visitors insight into Qatar’s heritage. The museum, in the village of Al Samriya outside Doha, is hosted inside a fort home to stables and an oryx sanctuary.
The basics
Exhibits inside the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum are divided into themes that range from Qatari heritage and Islamic Art to interests of the sheik, including vintage cars, hand-woven carpets, and even a traditional Syrian home. Visitors generally spend at least two hours exploring the museum’s exhibits, with many staying up to four hours here. The museum is regularly included in cultural tours in Qatar that explore beyond the city limits of Doha and is often combined with the nearby Shahaniyah Camel Race Track.
Things to know before you go
Guided tours of the museum are possible for an additional fee, depending on availability.
Photos and videos can be taken inside the museum, so long as flash or selfie sticks are not used.
The museum has a cloakroom for storing luggage or oversized items during your visit.
No food, only water, is allowed inside the gallery; there is a cafe on-site where you can purchase food and coffee.
How to get there
As the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is located well outside of Doha, it is only accessible by car. Getting to the museum takes roughly 30 minutes when driving from downtown Doha. You can get taxis that will take you to the museum, but you will then have to order another one to get back, so many people organize a driver when going independently.
When to get there
The Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is open every day of the week except Sundays, but it is also only open on Saturday afternoons. While much of the museum is indoors, there are outdoor parts, so the best time to visit is winter when the temperature outside is more comfortable.
The FBQ Car Museum
One of the main sections at the FBQ Museum is its immense car section, home to 300 classic cars from the sheik’s collection that helps trace the evolution of automobiles over the years. Its collection includes vintage automobiles from the early 1900s, sports cars, convertibles, and even historic pickups and trucks.
