Shuanglin Temple

About 1,500 years old, the Shuanglin Temple complex is home to China’s largest collection of painted Chinese clay sculptures, which are intricately decorated and well-preserved. To place each collection of sculptures in context, each chamber is painted with dramatic backdrops depicting China’s varied landscapes.
The basics
Step back through the many ages of Chinese history, defined by the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, during which each of the painted sculptures housed in the Shuanglin Temple were designed and created. In addition to displaying some of the finest exhibits of Chinese art available on public view, Shuanglin Temple is an imposing complex to explore, surrounded with fortress walls and built in traditional architectural styles reflecting the Qing and Ming Dynasties, in particular.
Things to know before you go
Shuanglin Temple is a great introduction to Chinese Buddhist art and history.
There is a fee to enter the temple.
Plan to spend at least 2 hours in the complex.
It can be hot in the summer, but cool inside the temple, so bring water and wear light layers.
How to get there
It takes about 30 minutes to travel the 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Pingyao by public bus, which is readily available and a good value. There are plenty of private tours and transfers available as well, if you would rather travel directly from your accommodations.
When to get there
During the peak summer season, the temple is open from morning to evening. Travel earlier or later in the day to avoid the crowds and beat the heat. In the off-peak season, which runs from September to March, opening hours are slightly shorter.

Within the streets of this walled city, which has existed since 800 BC, there is plenty of Qing and Ming dynasty architecture and design to discover.
