POINT OF INTEREST

Siamsa Tíre

Town Park, Tralee, Ireland

Located in the County Kerry town of Tralee, the Siamsa Tíre National Folk Theatre is housed in an all-brick, ring-shaped building and its outside appearance is almost as special as the spectacular Irish folk dancers, singers, and other performers that take the stage every April through October. With shows highlighting Celtic music and Irish dance, Siamsa Tíre is a wonderful place to soak up local and traditional culture.

The basics

You can catch a show or event at Siamsa Tíre National Folk Theatre year-round, but Irish culture-based shows and performances follow a unique schedule using the Celtic Calendar. (Let’s not forget that Siamsa Tíre means “music of the land.”) If seeing a traditional Irish folk show is top of your itinerary, it’s best to check ahead on the theater’s website to guarantee the calendar of events aligns with your visit.

Things to know before you go

  • Shows typically sell out, even ones that aren’t Irish cultural performances, so prebook your seats.

  • Whether you buy your admission tickets online or at the theater’s box office, a booking fee of €1.50 is required.

  • Siamsa Tíre is always closed on St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

  • The theater is accessible to those with disabilities.

How to get there

The Siamsa Tíre National Folk Theatre is next to the Tralee Town Park. The Brandon car park across from the theater is the best place to park if you’re arriving by car. If you’re traveling from Farranfore or Killarney, you can take the Irish Rail to Tralee. There’s also a bus route from Dingle to Tralee, which takes a little over an hour.

When to get there

April through October is the best time to go to the Siamsa Tíre if you’re hoping to see a traditional Celtic show, but the theater does host other events outside that window. Regardless of the month, you’ll still want to check the calendar online and book ahead. It’s best to get to Siamsa Tíre National Folk Theatre about 30 minutes ahead of your show’s starting time to park and find your seat without rushing.

Plan a Dingle day trip

While in Tralee, plan a trip to the small port town of Dingle, which lies about an hour away. It’s well worth the journey and you may even want to stay overnight if it’s your first time in Dingle. While in town, top activities include seeing the Wild Atlantic Way’s coastal sights, snagging some Irish-inspired seafood on the pub-lined streets, and kayaking in Dingle Harbour.
