Sick to Death

Bridge Street, Chester, England

One of Chester’s top family-friendly attractions, Sick to Death is dedicated to the history of medicine, in all its gross, gory, and shocking detail. Full of interactive exhibits and themed areas that focus on topics ranging from plagues and pandemics to autopsies and apothecaries, the museum is housed within the Grade II listed St. Michael’s Church in the medieval Chester Rows.

The basics

Perfect for visitors young and old alike, Sick to Death offers both an in-depth, informative look at medical history through the ages as well as playful, occasionally gruesome exhibitions and installations, which are sure to entertain younger visitors. Visits to the museum typically last around one hour, and are self-led; you’re free to explore the 15-plus themed areas at your own pace. Look out for the Grim Reaper and Asclepius, the ancient Greek God of medicine, learn about the dangers of medical quackery, wander down Diagnosis Alley, and much more.

Although tickets are sold upon arrival, it’s worth booking in advance for peace of mind and to guarantee admission—grab your tickets before you visit, and explore as part of a day out in the ever-popular Chester Rows.

Things to know before you go

  • Students and kids can visit Sick to Death for discounted rates, while children under 5 years old are free.

  • As Sick to Death is located in a historic church, it can get cold—be sure to bring warm layers with you.

  • Owing to its historic architecture, the museum has only partial accessibility: There are several steps to the entrance, but the interior is on one level and is wheelchair-friendly.

  • While the exhibitions are generally accessible to children, some areas, including the sexual health exhibition, are better suited to older visitors; these areas are marked as recommended for those over 18 years old, with a gate divider in place.

How to get there

Sick to Death is located in St. Michael’s Church on Bridge Street in the heart of Chester Rows. It is around 20 minutes on foot from Chester Station, the city’s major terminus. Several buses link the two, including the City Rail Link, while taxi services offer another option.

When to get there

Sick to Death is open daily, from morning until early evening; last entry is one hour before closing time. Expect the museum to be especially busy on weekends, in the summer, and during school holidays; it’s advisable to book online in advance at popular times.
