Sigatoka
Sigatoka, Viti Levu
Lushly green, with rolling sand dunes, Sigatoka is found on the main island of Viti Levu in Fiji. Its fertile lands along the Sigatoka River have led it to be nicknamed “the salad bowl of Fiji,” and its hyper-fresh produce stars in the local cuisine. With opportunities to bike, hike, and explore the river, Sigatoka is a destination for nature lovers.
The basics
Sigatoka is the perfect place to discover the flora and fauna of Fiji–the nearby Kula WILD Adventure Park offers fun for the whole family with rides and attractions but also includes classes and exhibits to teach you about the region’s unique ecosystem. Make time to immerse yourself in Fijian culture with one of the many tours that include a traditional meal, or venture further afield with a hike to the stunning Biausevu Waterfall.
Things to know before you go
Most visitors stay outside Sigatoka’s main town, opting for one of the resorts along the Coral Coast.
Sigatoka has a bustling produce and souvenir market, but bring cash, as most informal vendors won’t take cards.
If you don’t have a car, taxis are plentiful–just check the rates before agreeing to a trip.
How to get there
Located in the southwest of Vita Levu, the town is 2.5 hours away by car from the capital, Suva, or 1.5 hours from the big city of Nadi. You can follow the Queens Road straight to the town from either city or opt for a tour with included transportation. Otherwise, frequent buses run from both cities.
When to get there
Visit from May to October for calm weather and a lower risk of cyclones–humidity will be lower, and you’ll be more likely to have days filled with clear blue skies. Towards the end of October, visitors start to depart, and prices will dip, so you’ll have plenty of space to yourself.
Safari on the Sigatoka River
The Sigatoka River is the largest on the island of Vita Levu and is the town's lifeblood. Take a boat tour up the river and discover mist-covered mountains, densely forested shores, and fishermen working on the river for generations. Most tours include visiting one of the many villages dotting the riverbanks and a traditional Fijian lunch.
