POINT OF INTEREST

Signal Hill

Opoho, Dunedin, Otago, 9010

Signal Hill is a 1,289-foot (393-meter) hill in North Dunedin with a lookout providing sweeping views over the city and Otago Harbour. As well as being a popular place to drive or walk up, Signal Hill is one of Dunedin’s premier destinations for mountain biking, with trails available for a range of experience levels.

The basics

Walking or driving up Signal Hill is a good way of getting your bearings in Dunedin, as it provides one of the highest observation points in the city. Most of the hill is covered by a scenic reserve that allows mountain bikers to ride one of the best downhill tracks in New Zealand. The 3.8-mile (6.1-mile kilometer) Big Easy trail is best for beginners, although there are other, more challenging trails for those at the intermediate or expert skill level. Signal Hill’s popularity is enhanced by the fact that it’s so accessible from Dunedin’s center.

Things to know before you go

  • There is no fee to walk, drive, or cycle on Signal Hill.

  • Drivers can find a parking lot at the top of the hill.

  • Cyclists without their own wheels can rent mountain bikes from several shops in central Dunedin.

  • The lookout at Signal Hill is quite exposed to the weather and there’s little shade. Take the conditions into account when dressing or planning a hike up.

How to get there

Signal Hill is a 2.7-mile (4.3-kilometer) walk from the University of Otago for travelers staying in or around this North Dunedin landmark. Otherwise, you can drive to Signal Hill or take the bus toward Opoho and walk the 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from the Signal Hill Road, 160 bus stop. Mountain bikers can easily ride from central parts of Dunedin.

When to get there

Given the exposed nature of the Signal Hill lookout, it’s best to visit when the weather is clear so you won’t get wet or cold from the wind. If you’re mountain biking, clear, dry weather is also best. Dunedin experiences mild summers and cold, icy winters, so keep that in mind when heading up to higher parts of the city.

Climb Mount Cargill

If you’re looking for a more serious hike than that up Signal Hill, check out Mount Cargill, Dunedin’s highest point at 2,218 feet (676 meters). The hike to the summit takes about 3.5 hours round-trip and offers great views of the city and the surrounding countryside from a much higher vantage point than Signal Hill.
