Sitka National Historical Park

103 Monastery St., Sitka, Alaska

Created in 1910 to commemorate the 1804 Battle of Sitka between the native Tlingit people and the Russian colonists, the Sitka National Historical Park is Alaska’s oldest cultural and historic park. Highlights include the traditional totem poles that line the trails throughout the grounds, and the Russian Bishop’s House, one of the few remaining examples of Russian colonial architecture.

Most Sitka sightseeing tours include a visit to the Sitka National Historical Park, along with attractions such as St. Michael’s Cathedral, the Alaska Raptor Center, and the Fortress of the Bear. Choose a city sightseeing tour that also includes a whale-watching cruise or brewery tour to maximize your time in Sitka. If you’d like to delve more deeply into the area’s Indigenous history, opt for a Native Alaskan or totem-themed historical tour.

  • The park is a must-see for visitors interested in Native Alaskan history and culture.

  • Admission is free to the park trails, cultural center, and Russian Bishop’s House, but a fee is required for Russian Bishop’s House tours.

  • Wi-Fi is available at the visitor center.

  • The visitor Center and first floor of the Russian Bishop’s House are wheelchair accessible.

Sitka National Historical Park is in the town of Sitka, just off the coast of Juneau on Baranof Island. The park's visitor center is located east of the city center, within walking distance of the Sheldon Jackson Museum and the Russian Bishop’s House. Most park attractions are centrally located and within walking distance of each other. Bicycle rentals, taxis, and bus tours are also available in town.

The Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center is open throughout the year, though it operates with reduced opening hours and may be closed on some days of the week during the winter months. The Russian Bishop’s House is open daily May through September and by appointment for the rest of the year.

The Totem Trail begins at the door of the Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center and meanders through towering Sitka spruce and lush rainforest to the park’s 20 replica and original totem poles. Ranger-led totem hikes—over trails with a wide gravel surface and minimal elevation change—are available during the summer months, and are a great way to learn the stories behind the park’s totems.
