Skopje Kale Fortress (Skopsko Kale)

Samoilova, Skopje, North Macedonia, 1000

While it’s now showing its age and includes several unfinished buildings, the slightly rundown Skopje Kale Fortress has watched over the city in one form or another since the sixth century. All this fades from view when you walk along its crenelated walls, which offer hilltop views over the Skopje cityscape and the Vardar River below.

The basics

One of Skopje’s main historical landmarks and a defining feature of the city’s skyline, Skopje Kale Fortress fits into many Skopje city tours and walking tours. Some day tours to Matka Canyon meet at the fortress, but don't tour it. Allow 30 minutes to follow the path along its walls and admire the changing views. Any free time can be spent admiring the nearby Mustafa Paša and wandering the pedestrian streets of the Skopje Old Town.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission to the fortress is free.

  • Access to the path along the fortress walls involves climbing several stairs, and sections of the path are long, shallow staircases.

  • There is no historical information at the fortress.

How to get there

The Kale Fortress of Skopje is located north of the Vardar River near the city’s Old Bazaar. Travelers can easily walk to the fortress within 15 minutes from most places in the city center. Although there is a bus stop near the fortress at Goce Delchev Bridge, the bus routes are only helpful when coming from the Karposh and Chair neighborhoods. The area has multiple parking lots, including one at the fortress entrance.

When to get there

The gates to the Skopje Kale Fortress are open daily from morning to early evening. There is limited cover, so it can be hot in the middle of a summer's day and chilly in winter. Due to the location of the sun, come in the morning or late afternoon for good views of the city and Mr. Vodno.

History of Skopje

Travelers looking to learn the history of Skopje and North Macedonia after visiting the Kale Fortress have several options. One is the nearby Museum of the Republic of North Macedonia, the city’s main historical museum, which explains the region’s history. Down by the riverfront, there is also the more popular Archaeological Museum of the Republic of North Macedonia, which has exhibitions and artifacts on prehistory, antiquity, and onwards.
