Skyway Monte Bianco

Strada Statale 26 dir, 48, Courmayeur, Italy, 11013

The Skyway Monte Bianco is 2-stage ride by cable car, which whisks you from Italy’s Courmayeur high up the Monte Bianco—aka the Mont Blanc massif—to Punta Helbronner, where attractions like the Sky Vertigo Walkway and a 360-degree observatory await. Of course, the real highlight is the panoramic mountain views that sweep majestically over the Italian, French, and Swiss Alps on cloud-free days.

The basics

Buy your Skyway Monte Bianco tickets in advance to avoid lines at the ticket office. There are various ticket options to choose from, but many travelers opt for the round-trip ride to Punta Helbronner at 11,371 feet (3,466 meters). If you don’t want to go up so high, stop mid-way at Pavillion at 7,130 feet (2,173 meters), where you can check out walking trails, an artificial lake, and a playground. Attractions also include a Botanical Garden (summer only), the Cave Mont Blanc winery, and the Hangar 2173 museum.

Things to know before you go

  • There are eateries at the base station, Pavillion, and Punta Helbronner.

  • Find Europe’s highest bookshop—a branch of La Feltrinelli chain—at Punta Helbronner.

  • Due to the high altitude, a trip on the Skyway Monte Bianco isn’t recommended for babies under a year old, pregnant women, or anyone with heart or blood pressure issues.

  • The cable cars and stations are considered wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the second terrace at Punta Helbronner, which is accessed via a flight of stairs.

  • Disabled visitors and their registered carers are entitled to discounts, but these tickets need to be bought directly at the ticket office.

How to get there

The base station of the Skyway Monte Bianco is just outside of Courmayeur town, near to the highway and the Mont Blanc Tunnel exits. If you’re driving, there’s a large paid parking lot with both covered and uncovered parking spaces. By public transit from Courmayeur, take the 947 bus to the Skyway Monte Bianco stop.

When to get there

The Skyway Monte Bianco is open most of the year, with the exclusion of a fall-time maintenance period. There are regular departure times between morning and mid-afternoon, roughly once every 15 minutes. To beat the crowds, book a morning departure slot in advance. You need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your booked ascent.

From Italy to France

Want to continue from Punta Helbronner to the Aiguille du Midi in France? To do so, buy another ticket at the Compagnie du Mont Blanc ticket office at Punta Helbronner, and board the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car—available in summer only—for the onward journey over the Mer de Glace glacier. The weather dictates when it’s open, so it’s not possible to buy tickets in advance or at the base station.
