POINT OF INTEREST

South Hobart

South Hobart, Hobart, Tasmania, 7004

The leafy residential neighborhood of South Hobart offers a few attractions for travelers and many visitors find themselves passing through en route to nearby Mount Wellington. With its handsome Georgian buildings and green backdrop, it’s a picturesque district and home to the famous Cascades Brewery.

The basics

Sightseeing tours of Hobart often pass through South Hobart. Stop along the way to admire landmarks such as the 19th-century All Saints Anglican Church, enjoy views of Mount Wellington from afar, and visit the Cascades Female Factory, Hobart’s most important female convict site. The neighborhood’s most-visited attraction is the Cascade Brewery, Australia’s oldest operating brewery, with a history dating back to 1824. Beer lovers can visit the historic brewery, discover the beer-making process on a behind-the-scenes tour, and enjoy guided beer tastings.

Things to know before you go

  • Hiking and biking trails run from the Cascade Brewery to Mount Wellington and the surrounding area.
  • Aside from the Cascade Brewery, there are very few options for eating and drinking in South Hobart, so it’s best to bring a picnic or make other plans.
  • Although the wide lanes of South Hobart are easily accessible, attractions such as Cascade Brewery tours and the Cascades trail to Mount Wellington are not accessible for wheelchairs.

How to get there

South Hobart is located southwest of Hobart, about a 10-minute drive or taxi ride from downtown. Buses 446, 447, and 449 run from downtown Hobart, stopping along Cascade Road, close to the Brewery.

When to get there

A daytime visit is best to take in the sights; after dark, the residential district is quiet and there’s little for visitors to do. The views from Mt. Wellington are most impressive at sunrise or sunset, so you might want to time your visit accordingly.

Hiking to Mt. Wellington

The 4,170-foot (1,271-meter) Mt. Wellington, or ‘Kunanyi’, is Hobart’s most prominent natural landmark, affording panoramic views over the city and the River Derwent. While many travelers opt to drive to the mountaintop viewpoint, it’s also possible to hike to the summit. The marked Cascades Trail runs from behind the Cascade Brewery all the way to the top, a scenic 1.5 mile (2.4 kilometer) route that winds along myrtle forest trails, passing creeks and small waterfalls, before climbing up the rocky mountainside. Plan around two hours to reach the summit.
