Spreetshoogte Pass

Nauchas, Namibia

This Namibian mountain pass links the Khomas Highland and Namib Desert. With a top gradient of 14 percent, the road to the pass is among the region’s steepest. Quartzite rocks on the summit have become a landmark in their own right; the bright white stone can be seen at a distance as vehicles wind upward toward Spreetshoogte Pass.

The basics

Spreetshoogte Pass is a place to pause and enjoy the view while driving district road D1275 southeast of Windhoek. It’s a popular spot for picnicking, as the pass is a convenient stopping place on a steep, rugged route at the cusp of the Great Escarpment. While the pass is beautiful at any time of day, photographers praise this spot for the gorgeous afternoon light that gives way to dramatic sunsets.

Things to know before you go

  • Take your time: the road’s steep gradients and narrow curves can be dangerous.

  • The road to Spreetshoogte Pass is not suitable for vehicles with trailers.

  • Some drivers recommend lowering your tire pressure for greater traction.

How to get there

From Windhoek, head south toward Rehoboth and the C24 West. Next, continue southwest on D1261 until you reach the junction with D1275. Spreetshoogte Pass is located on D1275, which is 31 miles (50 kilometers) long, and ends at the junction with the C14. If you’re continuing from Spreetshoogte Pass to the coast, keep in mind that Solitaire has the last gasoline station until you reach Walvis Bay.

When to get there

Mild temperatures and dry weather mean the best time to visit Namibia is between May and October; it’s peak season, when dry conditions draw wildlife to watering holes and ensure great game viewing. Visitors take in the views from Spreetshoogte Pass at all times of day, and some favor the afternoon atmosphere.

What it’s like driving in Namibia

Limited public transit means driving is the most popular way to get around Namibia. Since many roads are unpaved, rugged 4WD vehicles are a good idea; most travelers renting a car begin and end their journeys in Windhoek. While distances can be long, it’s important to take it slow—roads are often unpaved and wildlife can cross suddenly. If you’d rather let someone else do the driving, consider booking a Namibia tour instead.
